CASE NOTE 02 / FICTIONAL SCENARIO

A better conversation starts before the meeting.

An illustrative workplace story about preparation, context and a shared understanding of the next step.

THE SITUATION

When accounts do not quite align.

A fictional organisation and an employee describe the same change differently. Before discussing a route forward, the record needs to be understood.

Dates, correspondence and the people involved help separate the sequence of events from the interpretation placed on it.

BEFORE

Prepare a concise chronology.

A clear account makes an initial conversation easier to follow.

DURING

Name the questions that remain.

A useful discussion can acknowledge uncertainty without filling the gaps with assumptions.

AFTER

Confirm the next conversation.

Record who is doing what, what information is needed and when the discussion will continue.

Preparation creates room to listen.

This fictional example demonstrates an approach to organising a conversation. It does not describe a client outcome or offer advice on an employment matter.

AFTER THE FIRST DISCUSSION

Keep the thread of the conversation.

The fictional team leaves the first meeting with a short recap: what was understood, which facts still need to be established and who will arrange the next discussion.

That small document is a way to keep the conversation connected. It is not a finding about anyone’s conduct and does not determine what action should follow. The next step remains a matter for an appropriately scoped engagement.
